by Evans Yonson
After making waves abroad and in Manila, Gawad Urian Best Picture winner ‘Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan’ will be showing in Cagayan de Oro for the first time with two screenings at 130 PM and 600 PM on 24 July 2014, Thursday, at Centrio Mall. Tickets may be purchased directly in Centrio.
Norte first premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France last year. Since then, it has gone on to show in several international film festivals, including Toronto, New York, Tokyo, and London. It continues to win accolades from international critics and has been named one of the best films of 2013 by Sight and Sound,Art Forum, Senses of Cinema, Film Stage, and La Internacional Cinéfilia, and one of the best films of 2014 so far by Variety, The A.V. Club, and The Art Stage.
In his review for the New York Times, A. O. Scott calls Norte “a tour de force (and) a true work of art.” He notes that while the film is “a meticulous indictment of injustice and inequality… there is also, above all, an almost inexhaustible humanism at the heart of this remarkable film.”
A re-imagining of the Dostoyevsky novel Crime and Punishment, Norte tells the story of three people whose lives take an irreversible turn when one of them commits a crime. Directed by indie maven Lav Diaz, it stars Sid Lucero, Angeli Bayani, and Archie Alemania.
Norte picked up four awards at this year’s Gawad Urian, namely Best Picture, Best Actress for Bayani, Best Cinematography for Larry Manda, and Best Screenplay for Diaz and Rody Vera. (PRESS RELEASE)
