River deep mountain high

by Evans Yonson

Barcelona – I have always admired Tina Turner when she staged her greatest comeback in the early 80s. Although I admire Private Dancer and What’s Love Got to Do With It, it is River Deep Mountain High that I love the most.

The song, written by Phil Sector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, flopped in its 1966 release in the US. Ike and Tina Turner are credited for this song as the artists. But it was only Tina’s voice that appeared in this cover. The song eventually one of Tina Turner’s signature pieces.

In 1994, Celine Dion did a live performance of this song in David Letterman’s Late Night Show. The appearance was successful that it became a part of Dion’s 1996 Failling into You album.

Below are the video versions of Tina Turner and Celine Dion, and see for yourself why River Deep Mountain High is truly a Tina’s simply the best.

When I was a little girl I had a rag doll
The only doll I’ve ever owned
Now I love you just the way I loved that rag doll
But only now my love has grown
And it gets stronger in every way
And it gets deeper let me say
And it gets higher day by day

Do I love you my oh my
River deep, mountain high yeah yeah yeah
If I lost you would I cry
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

When you were a young boy did you have a puppy
That always followed you around
Well I’m gonna be as faithful as that puppy
No I’ll never let you down
Cause it goes on and on like a river flows
And it gets bigger baby and heaven knows
And it gets sweeter baby as it grows

Do I love you my oh my
River deep, mountain high yeah yeah yeah
If I lost you would I cry
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

I love you baby like a flower loves the spring
And I love you baby like a robin loves to sing
And I love you baby like a schoolboy loves his bag
And I love you baby river deep mountain high
