i love the phantom
by Evans Yonson
Barcelona – When I breached the idea of visiting New York in 2009 to my dear friend, Margie, she immediately suggested that I go and watch the musical classics like The Phantom of the Opera. I have never seen this musical and I must admit, just the idea of watching of it on Broadway made me shiver. I watch the gala performance that night. At the end of the show, I was already crying no end. If you look at it closely and apply the story to Filipino gaydom, the Phantom could very well be your typical bading. Ready to offer the moon and the stars to his “imaginary” lover, Christine. This Andrew Lloyd Webber masterpiece is really a winner. And to cash in on its success, Sir Andrew recently opened its sequel,
Think of me
Think of me, think of me fondly,
when we’ve said goodbye.
Remember me once in a while –
please promise me you’ll try.
When you find that, once again, you long
to take your heart back and be free –
if you ever find a moment,
spare a thought for me
We never said our love was evergreen,
or as unchanging as the sea –
but if you can still remember
stop and think of me . . .
Think of all the things
we’ve shared and seen –
don’t think about the way things
might have been . . .
Think of me, think of me waking,
silent and resigned.
Imagine me, trying too hard
to put you from my mind.
Recall those days
look back on all those times,
think of the things we’ll never do –
there will never be a day,
when I won’t think of you . . .
Can it be? Can it be Christine?
Long ago, it seems so long ago
How young and innocent we were…
She may not remember me,
but I remember her…
The fruits of summer fade,
They have their seasons, so do we
but please promise me, that sometimes
you will think of me!
All I ask of you
No more talk of darkness,
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I’m here, nothing can harm you
my words will warm and calm you
Let me be your freedom,
let daylight dry your tears.
I’m here with you, beside you,
to guard you and to guide you…
Say you love me every waking moment,
turn my head with talk of summertime…
Say you need me with you now and always…
Promise me that all you say is true
that’s all I ask of you
Let me be your shelter
let me be your light
You’re safe, No one will find you
your fears are far behind you…
All I want is freedom,
a world with no more night
and you, always beside me, to hold me and to hide me…
Then say you’ll share with me
one love, one lifetime
let me lead you from your solitude
Say you need me with you here, beside you…
anywhere you go, let me go too
Christine, that’s all I ask of you…
Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime…
say the word and I will follow you…
Share each day with me,
each night, each morning…
Say you love me…
You know I do…
Love me – that’s all I ask of you
Anywhere you go let me go too
Love me – that’s all I ask of you…
