Barcelona – I’m back to my old self again: buying books and watching movies, which I believe are far better than burning some tobacco leaves. This week I bought five books from Amazon and three books from a local bookshop. I saw James Cameron’s Avatar, the 3D version. Today, to celebrate my first smoke-free week, I went to see Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. The only Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective character’s material that I have read isThe Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), which would later become the first Sherlock Holmes movie (1939).
I have always imagined Detective Sherlock Holmes a recluse, always ready to retire to his dark, dusty and muggy study. While Dr. John Watson, his right-hand guy, is the Sancho Panza to Holmes’ Don Quixote. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes was described as having “cat-like” love for personal cleanliness. In this latest Holmes and Watson outing, there is something about the screenplay that makes you wonder. Are they having an affair? I believe that Holmes here is a closet queen and Watson a bisexual. The way Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr) looks at Watson (Jude Law) makes the movie a Victorian Brokeback Mountain. But before going directly to the movie, let’s get some background story of these two characters (from various online sources).
1. Holmes and Watson live together in one apartment on 221B Baker Street.
2. Watson left the apartment after getting married but eventually came back when his wife died.
3. Holmes’ relationship with Watson is seen as the most significant in his entire life.
4. Holmes is a loner. Before meeting Watson, he only had one friend from college named Victor Trevor.
5. Irene Adler is the only woman that is almost always linked to Holmes, saved for the housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson.
In Guy Ritchie’s movie, Holmes and Watson could give Bella Swan and Edward Cullen a run for the 2010 MTV’s Movie Couple of the Year. Here are some lines from the movie to prove my point that they are so much in love.
Dr. John Watson: Get that out of my face.
Sherlock Holmes: Its not in your face, its in my hand.
Dr. John Watson: Then get what’s in your hand out of my face.
Irene Adler: Ugh,they’ve been flirting like this for hours.
Sherlock Holmes: It’s a matter of professional integrity! No girl wants to marry a doctor who can’t tell if a man’s dead or not!
Sherlock Holmes: You’ve never complained about my methods before.
Dr. John Watson: I’ve never complained! When have I ever complained about you practicing the violin at three in the morning, or your mess, your general lack of hygiene, your experiments on my dog, or the fact that you steal my clothes?
Aren’t they sweet?
Go and watch the movie and see for yourselves just how Holmes and Watson make a great love team. I have always loved Jude Law but I now love Sherlock Holmes more.
